The Lord is the Master of our school

Philosophy statement
At Hyland House School we recognise that God, the Creator and Sustainer of the earth, and the entire universe, is the source of knowledge and wisdom. He created us in perfect humanity. As a result of sin, humans lost this original state. We believe that through Christian Education, with faith in Christ, we can be restored in the image of our Maker.

Through the educational programme offered at our school, our goal is to prepare children for effective citizenship on this earth and for rewarding citizenship in the new earth.

About Hyland House

Hyland House School is one of more than five thousand schools, colleges and universities operated throughout the world by the Seventh-Day Adventist Organisation. We are a Christ-centered, dynamic, co-educational School small enough for each child to remain an individual and not lose his/her personal identity. The school’s warm, friendly atmosphere supported by firm yet kindly discipline provides an environment in which children may develop their abilities with confidence.Self-reliance, courtesy, thoughtfulness for others, respect for people, property and rules, are important aspects of school life.We aim to produce confident & well rounded individuals who, within a supportive and friendly community, have developed their potential academically, culturally & socially and are empowered to become positive and effective citizens within the 21st century world, with the character to live out the principle of ‘Achieving Excellence’. This is largely due to a team of Christian, talented, professional and committed staff that care for their students.

At Hyland House, we are striving towards ensuring that all our pupils have the essential knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes to enable them to achieve in a changing world. Our aspirations for our children throughout the 21st Century encompass technology and the development of learning communities where education is viewed as a lifelong activity. At Hyland House, high standards of teaching and learning underpin a commitment to success for all, where everyone feels safe, valued and fulfilled.

At our core, we believe in traditional values. We expect and demand good manners, discipline and respect. We understand the need to deliver the highest possible academic standards for all pupils and make sure that they are stretched in order to reach their full potential.

This website will give you an insight into our school and I welcome all parents wishing to visit us during the school day.

WHERE HE LEADS, WE WILL FOLLOW! Say the staff, parents and children.

September 2014 will see Hyland House SDA Independent School in a new location at the Holcombe Road site, London.

The site will be tailored to create a ‘state of the art’ learning and teaching environment for Hyland House students and teachers.

“After 25 years of searching for a more suitable site that would meet Ofsted requirements, whilst enjoying the ‘homely’ atmosphere of our present site in Walthamstow, we have come to accept that this move is God’s will,” commented Gina Abbequaye, long-standing Headteacher of Hyland House. “After 90 Years of the school being located in Waltham Forest, I never envisaged our school moving to the Holcombe Road site. However, my staff and I accept that God’s ways are not our ways and where He leads, we will follow! The vision is for specialist contractors to consult and work in partnership with staff, parents and children to achieve a learning facility fit for the 21st Century and beyond.”

The whole school is buzzing with excitement about the move!

Pupils in the Early Years Unit, Adam Seedat and Anthony Fuller Jr, described a collage board that the class had put together. It detailed everything they wanted to see in the new location, such as a swimming pool, trampoline, swings, pond, reading area, library and playhouse.

“The students are able to see the potential of such a large location,” said the Early Years

Co-ordinator, Karen Clarke. “Our main concern is not why we’ve ended up with that site, but how we can utilise it for outstanding learning.”

The children are looking forward to specially tailored classrooms that provide for ICT, Science, Food Technology, Art and DT, a Special Music Centre and a school kitchen providing ‘hot’ meals.

“I like that we will have a bigger space and big classrooms,” commented Year 5 student, Alicia D’Aguilar. “We can go to separate rooms for Art, ICT and cooking, I like that! We can do after school clubs and make so many things; even our parents could come if we let them in!”

“We will eat cooked food for lunch at the new place,” added Year 6 student Jerome Phillip. “No more packed lunch, only when we choose!”

“I can understand the concerns in moving,” commented Dean Palmer, a father of students in Years 1 & 4. “People might feel standards could drop or feel it may be too harsh an environment, but they’re moving staff that we trust and they will continue that standard, nothing will change except the location. The growth and development of the new school will only further benefit our children as they gain more areas to learn and play.

SEC President and Chair of the Governing Body of Hyland House School, Pastor Sam Davis commented, “The Holcombe Road site is vacant and has great facilities. It has been built up for educational purposes and the Hyland House School have been looking for a new building for over 25 years. Now that a location we already own has become available, it will be a great fit and good to see this opportunity pursued.”

Mrs Abbequaye says, “For us, Holcombe Road wasn’t our initial vision; however we now believe that there is a reason God wants us to be there.

So, what is Hyland House School?

Hyland House School is the enthusiastic, dedicated, Christian staff with a united vision of providing educational excellence to all our children. It is this ‘brand’ that will relocate to the new site.”
