TfL STARS

Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe

What is STARS?

STARS is TfL's accreditation scheme for London schools and nurseries. STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scootering and cycling. STARS supports pupils' wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improves road safety and air quality.

Hyland House School has been part of STARS since 2015, and currently holds the GOLD star accreditation.

As a school, we have found that it helps our pupils improve their emotional health and wellbeing, builds their influencing skills, encourages healthier travel behaviour and habits such as walking and scootering to school, and also contributes to their 60 minutes a day of physical activity.

As part of STARS, Hyland House staff look for a group of children in Years 5 & 6 to lead out and take responsibility for organising activities, enhance their presentations skills by taking assemblies and also to encourage and advise their peers on road safety.

These group of children are called Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTA).

Every academic year, children from Years 5 & 6 are able to apply for this role, and build on their interviewing skills, and form filling at a young age. They are able to take part in various activities and have the opportunity to find out ways to encourage others to travel to and from school in safer more active ways. The JTAs are able to meet with other schools in London and share and develop ideas and skills. They build on their confidence in public speaking, fundraising and leadership skills, and also have the opportunity to attend STARS Celebration Award Ceremonies. The JTAs are able to give advice on how their peers can prepare themselves for their journeys when travelling to their secondary school in September.

We look forward to maintaining our GOLD star accreditation and will continue working hard to achieve this.
